Cuba’s Artists: Creating Through Crisis
Across Cuba, artists are facing one of the most difficult periods in recent history. Frequent power outages, shortages of food and basic supplies, and limited access to essential resources have made daily life a constant challenge. For musicians, dancers, and creatives, these hardships go beyond survival—they directly impact their ability to create, perform, and share their art with the world.
And yet, they continue.
In homes lit by rechargeable lamps, in neighborhoods without steady electricity, and in communities stretched thin, Cuba’s artists are still finding ways to rehearse, teach, and perform. Their resilience is a powerful reminder that art does not stop in times of struggle—it becomes even more important.
The arts in Cuba have always been a source of pride, identity, and connection. Today, they are also a source of hope.

“International Jazz Day AZ Havana is proud to unite under the umbrella of the Orozco Contemporáneo Cultural Art Center, joining in its mission to celebrate and share Cuba’s vibrant cultural heritage with the world.”
Meet the Founder and Director:
Orozco is a Cuban dancer, choreographer, cultural manager, and academic from Matanzas. Trained at a top Cuban art school, she mastered classical ballet, modern, contemporary dance, and folklore, with a strong focus on Cuban cultural identity and transculturality. A former prima ballerina of Contemporary Dance of Cuba and top-level maître, she specializes in contemporary dance exploring ritual, movement, and social themes. She teaches at the University of Havana in dance, choreography, and cultural history, and is an active member of the Asociación Hermanos Saíz.
